Ascent Trip Report

Early spring snowshoe trip starting from CA89 and FS Road 051. Started 1h before dawn to take advantage of firm snow conditions as long as possible. Was pleased to find the road well-packed by snowmobile traffic. This was critical, because it allowed me to bare-boot the 4 mi approach to Horse Meadow at a good pace. Near Horse Meadow, I switched to snowshoes and headed across the creek, north through an aspen grove, and up steep slopes aiming generally for peak 10460+ before cutting over towards Freel. Nearly perfect spring conditions; about 5% breakable crust but otherwise just good firm snow for climbing. I topped out on Freel Peak 3:05h after leaving the trail head.

After a short break on the cold summit, I headed over an intermediate bump and then to Jobs Sister, again over mostly firm snow. It had warmed up a bit, so I stayed on the summit of Jobs Sister for a bit longer, taking in the panoramic views of snowy Tahoe and the Norther Sierra. At this point I removed the snowshoes for the steep, 1000 ft descent to the saddle to the SE. Bare boots made for better security on the steep snow, but also allowed me to take advantage of the snow-free patches of sand and scree on the descent as well as the spine of rock running along the ridge way up to Jobs Peak. I tagged Peak 10505 along the way, then hiked up to Jobs.

I bare-booted back to the headwall of the Willow Creek drainage then switched back to snowshoes for a fun and vigorous plunge-stepping descent back to Horse Meadow, then the long exit along the snowmobile tracks back to the highway. Awesome day out.

16 mi, 4800 ft gain, 8:50h.
