Ascent Trip Report

It was cold. Called the land owners for permission around 8:00am, I was passing through on a long solo road trip from Nevada to New Jersey visiting some friends in Montana and Minnesota along the way. A nice woman on the phone directed me where to park amongst some abandoned buildings and said they had wondered why more people weren't climbing their hill in this lovely weather. (-10 F) I was geared up for it though with all of my winter stuff in the car incase of getting stranded for weather or something and having to walk around in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota. Pretty straight forward route to the top, there was about 4 inches of snow on the ground, but it was windpacked and pretty firm, deeper drifts in a few spots near ditches or whatever. I didn't stay long on top, the wind was strong enough to keep you off balance, took a couple of pictures, one self portrait and bailed. About 1/2 mile from making it back to my car, I meet a pick-up coming across the field. It was the landowners, I guess the Gentleman of the house decided I was crazy when his wife relayed that there was someone heading up the hill, so they came to check on me and insisted I accept a ride back to my car, I was almost there and doing fine, but I oblidged them. The farmer told me the windchill was probably 45 below up on top. Maybe the frost growing on my eyelashes worried them? Anyway, Good climb, beautiful spot, and like the woman said, lovely weather for December in western North Dakota.
