Ascent Trip ReportWalked 3 miles up the Smithbrook road to the trailhead and scrambled to the top from there. There was a few inches of fresh snow on top of a hard crust. We were on snow shoes all the way from the car. The day was cloudy with little wind and just below freezing on the way up, but it cleared up nicely for the trip down. It made for some very nice views. We decided to try to come down the west ridge and thought we might be able to pick our way to the PCT. But the snow conditions were such that it was not feasible. We got down to about 5200 ft and cut SE to pick up our up-trail. The going was doable, but steep and we changed from snowshoes to microspikes and poles to ice axes several time as the conditions changed. We were sometimes post holing to our crotches and other times on steep ice. Nonetheless we were able to make the switches quickly and get down without mishap. We made it back to the road just before dark and did the last 3 miles of road via head lamp.
