Ascent Trip Report

After Nettle Creek I continued south on the Thomas Divide trail until I reached the Newton Bald trail. I took the sharp left and went about .52 miles before turning off trail and completing the short bushwhack to the top. The summit has a stand of oaks and relatively few brambles. The rain started to get heavier and with no views to hold my interest, I started back promptly.

This route is longer than simply hiking Newton Bald Trail from Smokemont but it saves several thousand feet of climbing and only adds another couple miles if you're doing Nettle Creek anyway.
