Ascent Trip Report

A beautiful bluebird day ascent of Mount Saint Helens. Left the parking lot at 5:45 AM. Used headlamps for only about 30 minutes. Attached crampons just below Chocolate Falls. The snow was firm and in great condition for hiking all of the way to the summit. There are plenty of good boot tracks to follow. The final 50' of elevation to the crater rim was windblown and icy but easily traversed. The summit was windy and cold so we took our summit photos and then descended to the flats at 7,800 feet for a break before descending. There were excellent glissade chutes all of the way down to the camps at 4,000 feet.
