Ascent Trip ReportJust when I thought I wouldn't get any hiking in this winter, a last minute text from my friend Zach had me heading up to NH early on a bitterly cold Saturday morning to do Moosilauke. We arrived at the parking area on Ravine Rd in separate cars (due to Covid) about 7:45am. We were the 4th and 5th cars there, but quickly more followed. If we had arrived just 10 minutes later, there wouldn't be anymore angled parking spots remaining and would have had to park precariously on the side of the road. The temperature was 8F at the parking area according to my car.
We started up the road and quickly passed a group of 3. We went past the RMC lodge and headed up Gorge Brook Trail. There was 1-2 inches of wind blown snow on the trail, but microspikes were sufficient on the packed down trail all the way up. We were the first ones up the trail this day and also the first ones on the summit. Above tree line it was very cold and windy, but not as windy as I expected. I'm glad I brought the outer shell of my ski jacket to help against the wind. It was also cloudy and we could only see about 20 yds ahead of us. Zach only hikes in the winter, but even he had never been in these limited sight conditions before. We made it to the summit, snapped a few pics of us and the signs, and then quickly headed back the way we came. I wanted to do a loop, but Zach was nervous about finding the trail we came up on already and even I wasn't 100% sure where exactly the Carriage Road started, so we played it safe. Smooth sailing back down and we passed many people heading up, so we were happy we got an early start. This was my first AMC 4000 footer in the winter, but not my first 4000 footer in the winter. I did Hight and North Carter last year.
