Ascent Trip Report

Trailhead is at the El Capitan Reserve operated by the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation. This is Hike No. 15 of the County's 15-Hike Challenge and my last hike to meet this requirement.

I parked outside the gates, as I correctly anticipated that I would return after dark. Trail is well marked and well used. It is steep in places. There is a lot of up-and-down. There are mile markers to measure your progress. Especially, as you reach the peak of El Cajon Mountain there are green trail markers to guide you up and down. Trail is quite rocky in some places, and some minor boulder hopping is inevitable. No bushwhacking and no real scrambling. There is a trail junction that leads to the peak of El Capitan, which I did not attempt, given the lateness of the hour.

There is a sign when you get to the top and a benchmark. I did not find a register. I made it to the peak about 3 p.m. and anticipated I would be coming down after dark and I notified my support team accordingly. I reached the bottom about 7 p.m. It was, indeed dark. I was glad I had parked across the street on the shoulder.
