Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead is at Farmer Road. This represents a return trip in order to meet two objectives (1). To follow the Five Oaks Trail in order to meet the County Parks Challenge and (2) to chase down the four benchmarks associated with Volcan Mountain.
Again, this hike was to ascend Volcan Mountain and Volcan Benchmark in the Volcan Mountain Preserve operated by San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation. This is separate and distinct from the Volcan Mountains High Point aka Pechacho Benchmark in the Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation.
Trailhead is well marked and well maintained off of Farmer Road in the community of Wynola, near Julian California. An elaborate gateway, designed by local artist James Hubbell marks the entrance to the Wilderness Preserve. Indeed, James Hubbell's Onion House is a local landmark and merits a visit in its own right.
The Five Oaks Trail is a well-marked and well-maintained offshoot of the main service road. The views are better to the south, including Cuyamaca Peak and the town of Julian. It is a more interesting wilderness experience than the service road. This trail eventually joins the main service road that leads to the peak. Points of interest include the astronomers' cabin, the lookout point with binoculars, assorted information kiosks, three of the four benchmarks identified with Volcan Mountain, and an aviation beacon tower.
I ventured into the wilds of Simmons Flat in search of the fourth benchmark, but found the day growing late. I need to find a GPS device more suited to chasing benchmarks.
I returned to the trailhead via the service road, arriving just before sunset. Returning home, I found that Mom's Pies, Dudley's, and Julian Pies were all closed. You can find Julian Pies and Dudley's Bread at Don's Market in Santa Ysabel. For solid food, you might look for Pete's BBQ in Ramona. You will find it at the intersection of Hwy. 78 and Main and in the back of a liquor store. Take-out only due to Covid restrictions.
