Ascent Trip Report

Second time going up this heavily wooded "hill" named Bald. It is not bald. But Being over 11,400 feet MSL the trees thin out some and there are nice views of the 13ers and 14ers behind it. The vegetation is mostly Englemann Spruce and Bristlecone Pine. The snow was 2 to 2.5 feet deep along the roadway but as I has suspected the maintenance road up to the tower was plowed some. A tracked plow had gone up there recently enough that the snow depth in the road was 1" to 15" and compact by the tracked vehicle so we did not need spikes or snow shoes. A misstep off to the side of the snow cut however was a plunge well above the knee in powder. All of the country roads up to the maintenance road were plowed nicely so Karen's tiny Suburu cross trek once again had no issues getting to the TH in January over 11,000 feet. Not sure that our luck will hold up every time we try this in winter but so far we are two for two being able to get there in a AWD car and hike up the road because it was plowed well enough there was no post holing.
