Ascent Trip ReportSet out for Newcastle on the promise of the best weather forecast for a long weekend in Northern Ireland. It was actually the worst. Through the woods of Donard Park and the path up the hanging valley, conditions were good, and enlivened by chats with other walkers, including a party climbing the four Irish provincial high points - Donard, Meelrea, Carrantuohil and Lugnaquilla - in 48 hours. Sleet lashed down on the walk by the Mourne wall to the summit, then eased off enough to tempt me up first Chimney Rock Mountain, then Cove Mountain and Slievelammagan, before returning as intense snow and hail and forcing a slow, cold retreat back over the wall and through Donard Park.
