Ascent Trip Report

On this partially sunny afternoon after a long spell of overcast skies, I found a parking spot at the top of the saddle, it being around 4:40 pm and near sunset, to start up the gated Nettleton Road. I choose this hike because the road is wide and, only about half the hikers are now wearing masks, it's not the trail of narrow road up Bald Hill where it's difficult to get into the brush and not get close to people. I passed about a dozen folks on the way up, less than half wearing masks.

However, there were low clouds on the nearby peaks and, sure enough, I got in them a bit before getting to the spur road to the top. It was getting dark fast, and, once I left the cloud cover quite a way down the Vinyard Peak Trail, it was too dark to follow that trail, so I had to use my flashlight for the first time in maybe a year of hiking these hills. I also heard a screech out in the distance ahead, which could have been a mountain lion, so I whistled my way down while waving the flashlight about to keep the possibility remote of meeting one on the trail. Instead, the flashlight revealed a few bats buzzing me. When I got back to the trailhead, only one car remained with a bikee loading up. As for walking in complete darkness, I enjoy it regardless of the possibility of meeting up with animals.
