Ascent Trip ReportWe hiked the road up until the summer trailhead and then the trail up to the lookout. We did get a small sun break at the top so Sun Top could live up to its name but no views of Rainier. We got glimpses of the surrounding mountains as the clouds moved.
The road was snow-covered starting at the gate in the morning. By afternoon, much of the snow had melted down low. We needed snowshoes from ~2800 feet.
On the way down, we cut switchbacks to save mileage and time but the second cut was definitely not a shortcut. It took us longer than the road due to the terrain (bushwhacking through steep, sometimes thick vegetation) but it added an element of adventure and made us appreciate the boring road walk when we hit the road once again.
It was a fun day out. We started around 9:15 am and got back to the cars at 4:00 pm.
