Ascent Trip ReportSolo hike up Colvin and then Blake and return by same almost the same route. Not my favorite hike, most of the day was not much fun. Started from AMR parking lot at 4:25, up the Ausable road and Lake Road with headlamp, missed the Gill Brook Trail turnoff in the dark, so I took the Gill Brook Cutoff instead. There were some very icy sections in the steepest areas due to a full day and night of heavy rain and a freeze again overnight. The worst was just before the Colvin Summit and then down and up to Blake. At times I was slowed to almost a standstill and took some bushwhack detours beside the trail to avoid the worst ice sheets. A few times I considered not continuing to Blake. Descending was the sketchiest and I took one 10 foot sliding fall down a little ice cliff.
Headed back down I was pleasantly surprised by Gill Brook, lots of nice waterfalls. Missed seeing it on the way up with it being dark and taking the detour.
It took about 9 hours hiking time. I only stopped for about 15 minutes on top of Blake where there was a nice flat open area with a big rock to sit on. It was snowing lightly most of the day, no views. I was very sore by the end. Not many out on the trail today, saw only three others going up Colvin/Blake.
