Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead is at Paso Picacho Campground in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in San Diego County. Parking fee for day use is $9.00. Park no longer sells seasonal passes. You must buy them at headquarters in Old Town or on line. Stonewall Peak trail is directly across the street, well marked, and well maintained.
Climb is a nifty little scamper. It was a bright and sunny day, so the views were spectacular, particularly Cuyamaca Peak and Lake Cuyamaca. If you squint, you can the the Palomar Observatory to the north.
Trip down was a slightly different matter. We went in search of Little Stonewall Peak. This meant hiking down the backside of the mountain until we reached the saddle. Given the late hour, we decided to save Little Stonewall for another day. However, we chose to continue our descent down to the flats, which meant going about 3.9 miles out of our way. Trail down was very rocky with a few fallen trees blocking the trail. We followed the California Riding and Hiking Trail which, again, took us on a circuitous route around the backside of Paso Picacho. We eventually reached the parking lot and returned home.
I'm happy to report that Dudley's Bakery was open, but there was no sit-down food service. Julian Pies was selling whole pies out the windows. There were lines in both places.
