Ascent Trip Report

Started the climb from Steenburg Road up the Long Path. There was some snow on the ground but not enough to interfere with hiking much. The path headed through a mixture of bare forest and evergreen stands, with a relatively easy grade. Despite the low temperatures there was an enormous amount of deep mud, especially in the flat areas near the summit.

The Long Path turns around to High Peak's north; on the left here is a snowmobile trail that links up very shortly with the blazed Kaaterskill High Peak Trail. About a hundred feet down this trail is the herd path to the summit, on the left. This was hard to follow sometimes; thankfully there were people hiking ahead of me and I could follow tracks in the snow. The steepest portions of the hike are along here, going up through some icy areas and frozen waterfalls.

There was enough snow at the summit that I couldn't find the survey marker, but the orange canister was hard to miss. About a quarter mile past the summit is Hurricane Ledge, where the best views from the peak are. However, there's a north-facing overlook along the herd path on the way back down the mountain.
