Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead is at the Pioneer Mail picnic ground. YOu will find restrooms here. You will need an US Forest Service Adventure Pass to park. Trail entrance is well marked with a kiosk and a concrete cistern with non-potable water. This is part of the Pacific Crest Trail and it continues for a half-mile up to Kwaymii Point, another drive-up trailhead with plenty of parking. No restrooms.
From this point, we took the Pacific Crest Trail until we realized it was taking us down into the desert. Look for a trail with a gate when you leave Kwaaymii. Then we began an uphill bushwhack which eventually took us to the top of Garnet Benchmark. If there was a benchmark or, more likely, a boundary marker, it seems to have broken off, leaving a minor post in its place. In any case the benchmark does not mark the highest point on the mountain. There is a windblown rock just above it that bears a resemblance to Abraham Lincoln.
The alleged jeep trail marked on the map disappears, so we bushwhacked downhill to Sunrise Highway, returned to Kwaymii Point, and back to Pioneer Mail without incident.
Garnet Benchmark VABM 5669 is not the highest point on the mountain. The benchmark or boundary marker is broken off and there is a post to mark the spot. No cairn, register, or geocache (2020-12-09). Photo by Jeffrey Swain.
