Ascent Trip ReportI did a lot of research for this hike. I noticed references to an approach from the SW that was 1/2 the distance/time. I found some articles about people doing "208" (visiting every town in VT) and the crux of the visits being the town of Lewis (the most remote town in VT) and Lewis pond. Why not visit this "special" area and record the GPX track for the ascent from there.
I drove east on 105 and turned left onto Lewis Pond Rd. This is too easy. BAM! gated. That's odd, there are lots of reports of people driving out to Lewis pond. Why the gate? Is it because it's late Nov and the road is closed for snowmobiling already? The gate looks pretty permanent. There must be another approach. I look at the maps and I decide to head east and try for another entrance.
About 1 mile past the "Silvio O Conte" headquarters office on 105 there is an entrance (Stone Dam Rd)!! The road in is in great shape and I drove right to the Lewis Pond Overlook at parked at 44.897798, -71.786084. The Gore Mt trailhead leaves right from the parking lot.
07:39 - Depart Lewis Pond Overlook on the "Lewis Pond Trail to Gore Mt" trail. The trail is initially a VAST snowmobile trail and is very wide and easy. You eventually reach a signed entrance to the trail with a bench. The trail is pretty easy to follow. There was snow on the ground and 1 set of human tracks (+ 1 set of moose tracks near the top).
08:31 - Summit. Signed the logbook in the cabin and took a few pics.
08:35 - Depart the summit. Trot, jog back down. It's pretty easy going evening with the ~4-6" of snow.
09:08 - Back at the car.
