Ascent Trip ReportThis was one of my first recorded Uwharrie National Forest peak climbs that included at least 4 peaks.
I arrived at the Dickey Bell Trailhead early in the morning after traveling down NC 109 south off from I-85 North near Lexington. Take a right on the paved Reservation Road and again right on Moccasin Creek Road (FR 576). After several miles, turn left on Dutch John Road and then left again on Green Gap Shores Road. Shortly down this road, you will reach the Dickey Bell Trailhead. Pull off gently to the right and make sure you are WAY off the road, as every imaginable vehicle may be speeding by you and your car. This is a busy place in summer.
My goal was to climb four peaks in this area in the hot weather and among folks who were after a lot of other things than a walk in the woods.
The hike up to Dickey Bell Hill is a mix of off road walking and some semi-mountain climbing up steep slopes that have been eroded by the constant attack of ORV trying to climb 65% angle heights over rocks as big as a small house. After walking around the first of these, I learned to ignore the angry voices damning the hill and wondering why their 6 foot clearance vehicles could not get them up the hill. I have pictures.
After cresting the ridge, the trail narrowed to a wide ditch that was popular with many mountain bikers traveling up and down the trail. Dodging the speeding 2 wheeled crazies, I continued onto to the first ridge, where the Dickey Bell Hil HP is to the right on a barren (but forested) summit. From here it is a ridge hop to the other nearby peaks. |
