Ascent Trip Report

US Highway 191 as it goes through the mining area around Morenci is like an amusement park ride- mining going on all around the road- the road even going through mining areas! I was originally going to wait for the Spring for this peak, but after checking the gage height history, I noticed that sometimes the creek crossing is too high in the Spring. The road is as described by Dean Gaudet.

I was very disappointed in the trail- it was extremely rocky- basically a long balance and ankle workout.

On my ascent, I decided to abandon the trail in favor of the ridgeline which appeared to have a more consistent slope- as opposed to the standard route which has a steep climb after it abandons the trail. I had second thoughts about it being better, so I took the standard route down- yup, I preferred my ridge route. The only difficult part of the ridge route is the initial steep climb of about 200 vertical feet to gain the ridge. Once on the ridge, there were cattle trails making travel easier (yes, the cattle trails were better than the "Grand Enchantment Trail").
