Ascent Trip ReportIt snowed about 10 inches last weekend but today was unseasonably warm for November, melting almost all the snow with water running everywhere. With the nice weather it was a very busy Saturday on the trails. I left the Adk Loj register at 5:45 a.m. with a headlamp and made good time to Marcy Dam. I followed a group there that I knew was headed to Tabletop and unfortunately they took a roundabout route, the High Water route for some reason. I think this added about an hour, but it’s a nice new trail and I got to see the new Phelps Lean-to. I made it to the summit in under 3 hours, 6.3 miles on my All Trails app.
I only spent 5 minutes at the Summit and then started down. On the way back I detoured to bushwhack up TR Mountain, which took about 15 minutes. This was an easy bushwhack, very straightforward and mostly open. There’s a good herd path that disappears now and then. Not much in the way of views. Then I went up Phelps Mountain which has great views all around, but especially of the entire Tabletop Ridgeline with the other summits. Up and down Phelps with a break on top took about 2 hours 15 minutes. Heading back I took the normal route to Marcy Dam, a lot faster. Back to the car before 3:00, which was 8 hours 30 minutes hiking time. Pretty tired by the end. |
