Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead for this hike was Walnut Grove Park in San Marcos, CA. Objective was to finish out the Purple Heart Trail and also climb Peak 1330, which is in Lists of John, but not on Peakbaggers. I had made a previous attempt at this peak, but came up short, due to a pretty convincing fence. I logged a minor peak next door (Peak 1156) previously as a consolation prize.
So I wandered aimlessly around San Marcos until I had finished my Purple Heart objective. There is a Purple Heart Monument, which was someone's Eagle Scout project. Flags were flying. I returned to N Twin Oaks Valley Road and Buena Creek Road. I turned right on Sunshine Mountain Road, which is labeled as a private road. Since the Sunshine Mountain Vineyard was open for business, I met no objections heading up the hill. Weather was a little blustery and there was some drizzle.
There is a gate after the Sunshine Mountain Vineyard, but it was easy to walk around. The road is steep and steady at this point and leads past some multi-million dollar homes, eventually coming to the gate for Peak 1330. The house sits atop the hill like Xanadu in Citizen Kane. There was a way to circumvent the gate on a neighbor's property to access the driveway to Peak 1330. Security seemed pretty tight and I have a healthy paranoia about lead poisoning; so I called it quits at the gate and considered it a success. Travel beyond the gate would be neither technically or physically very difficult.
Down the hill was a vacant home with a romanesque porch. I hung out there a while to escape the drizzle. I watched the house behind the gate and saw no lights going on or off, despite the darkness of the cloud cover. Weather cleared and I returned the way I came without incident. There was a pretty raucous party at the Sunshine Mountain Winery. I expect a wedding.
