Ascent Trip Report

We explored the highpoint areas in Starr County near the small community of Viboras. We drove to a gate at the El Macho Ranch, where we could see a nice home about 500 feet up the way. An older man came out to check us out and it was obvious he walked slow with a cane, so Bob elected to go in and greet the man.

I stayed behind at the gate and watched them. I could see them conversing and pointing and waving. Finally, Bob waved for me to walk up. Turns out the man was the caretaker only and spoke only Spanish, while Bob spoke essentially no Spanish. My Spanish is barely adequate, but I was able to explain to this man what we wanted to do. He was friendly, of course, but I guess there were strict rules to not let anyone one. He denied us permission. We thanked him and went on our way.
