Ascent of Flattop Mountain on 2010-11-12
|Date:||Friday, November 12, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4528 ft / 1380 m|
Ascent Trip ReportFrom I-81, take VA 91 north through Saltville to the village of Broadford, where 91 turns L and VA 42 continues ahead toward Bland. Follow 91 for 4.2 miles up to the gap. Turn L onto White Rock Road, a well-maintained gravel road that should be suitable for cars in reasonable weather. Continue 6.2 miles (passing through a village of hunting cabins) to a turnaround where the road ahead is blocked by a mudhole. Resist the temptation to drive further. You probably won't get stuck, but there's a gate less than 100 yards ahead. Park at the turnaround and hike about 2 miles, following the roadway, which is littered with blown-down trees but will lead you almost all the way to the summit. The climb is very gentle. Spectacular views to the W and S from clifftops at the summit.
This was my 8th of the 13 VA peaks over 4500 feet, momentarily matching Rick Shortt for 1st on the Peakbagger list. Rick completed the list just a few weeks later, and I am confident that others have done it, too.
