Ascent Trip ReportRidge from Pk 4810 to notch east of 4710 is absolutely miserable mix of bushwhacking and steep heather but stays class 2. Everything else is class 1, making this the “easiest” route on Lawson but far from easy. Steep unpleasant descent to around 3900 then pleasant open country and open forest up to south ridge of Lawson, then very pleasant game trails and open terrain to the summit. I camped just below the summit and topped out in the morning. Amazing sunrise views from 4900-ish bivy spot. Return from creek at 3800 to Pk 4810 was almost as unpleasant as initial ascent but I knew where to hit some nice heather slopes to avoid some of the bad spots. I also skirted Pk 4810 on the way out to gain the main descent ridge. This time of year N Fork Quinault at my crossing near Rustler Creek was knee deep and pleasant (but frigid cold). Cross a few hundred feet above the confluence for a nice shallow/wide spot, using the most upstream mid-point rock island to make the crossing. Didn't see a soul car to car across 2 days even on the trail sections; my car was the only one in the parking lot when I departed Sat AM and still the only car when I returned around 5:30pm Sun. Still snow-free this late in the season when the Cascades have been seeing snow quite low elevation so far. Best bivy spot in the Olympics! A great suffer-fest to close out the summer 2020 season!
