Ascent Trip ReportThe crux of this route is the drive to the trailhead. There are certainly worse roads out there, and this one is not particularly steep or hair-raisingly exposed. But it is long and features sustained sections of big ugly sharp rocks and deep ruts. Dave really did not have too much of trouble navigating it in his 4Runner, rating it only a 4 out of 10 on his scale, and he only took about 50 minutes each way to do the drive, a pretty aggressive time. But anything less capable (e.g. Subaru, RAV4, CRV, etc.) might have some problems or need to be driven extra slowly and with care.
The hike is mostly on a good trail, which right away loses a couple hundred feet into a creek valley before starting to climb up to the Table, a vast flat grassy plain that is quite scenic. There is no trail up the slope from here, but eventually the route turns a corner to slab along a ridge, where a good footway leads the summit on a circuitous winding path.
As the path slabbed under the summit ridge we abandoned it to head directly uphill on talus to the broad crest NE of the summit, and the scrambled easily to the very top. After a good rest we headed down, and I elected to tag the low-prominence NE peak before dropping down to the pathway and rejoin Dave--that was an easy detour and an easy Class 2.
Overall a nice hike, and we didn't see any humans at all while away from the US 50 highway.
