Ascent Trip ReportI am totally going to end up repeating these peaks just to do the loop route I’ve been yearning to do for too long. We weren’t sure what weather would allow today so we chose an easy peak with the safety of an old 4wd road and added protection of trees for a majority of the approach in case those 50mph + snow showed up. We also wanted peaks with enough bail options with the mindset of getting as many summits as we could before the storm caught us. This group of peaks are great for just that with multiple places to bail off Winfield, Virginia, West Virginia & Sheep Rock to descend down into Silver Basin then to the CDT to get back to where we parked.
We started near the CDT parking lot off CR 390A (easy 4wd). We continued by foot on this road for ~0.5 miles before turning left onto the old 4wd road that requires a creek crossing. This road has been closed for quite some time with much overgrowth and areas of stacked deadfall. None of it was show stopping and the old road still served to aid in faster travel. On our ascent, we should have either left the road sooner for the ridge or stayed to the road for the entirety but we got impatient and wanted peaks faster... this resulted in unpleasant sidehilling over loose & steep terrain for a short segment. Sticking to the road for the way back was MUCH better.
Upon nearing Winfield Pk we spotted a legit game path and took that to shortcut some switchbacks for reaching the ridge. C2 ridge to reach Winfield’s false summit. Then C2 boulder hopping & ridge walking all the way to Virginia Pk.
I kept a watchful eye on the clouds and increasing winds, timing it’s arrival and cutting us off after Virginia. This was a good call! Weather let loose after reversing our route and reaching the relative safety of the old road.
We had options to descend from Winfield-Virginia saddle but unlike me, Marisa is very uncomfortable scree skiing for a quick descent and we agreed it would be more enjoyable to do a simple out-&-back.
