W/ Philip, Maddie, and Rebecca. Thanks so much for joining all! Continuing the long history of Pasayten trips on first weekend of October :)
We left TH at ~6am to make the long hike up to Lake of the Woods. There were lots of distractions and breaks to admire to larches, which were prime :) Made it to the lake and went swimming (in October!)
There was some talk about trying to see if we could make a Lake summit bivy work, yet there was some skepticism. We decided a good compromise was to drop overnight stuff at Lake of the Woods, then watch the sunset from Lake summit and return to LofW camp. In retrospect I think a more optimized 2 day itinerary is fastpack style, with a carry over of Lake then camp in the basin between Lake and Monument (near the reliable water source). But our itinerary worked great for us.
We surprised Philip with a birthday cake of sorts. Happy birthday dude! Sunset was incredible with some smokey colors. We left at sunset and used headlamps for half of the descent back to camp. Awesome day :)
Phlip and Madde weren't totally feeling Monument and decided to roll around in the soft larch needles while Rebecca and I went back out there. We left just after 5am and climbed under a bright moon through the clear early morning, which was a highlight for me. Eventually the sun rose and lit up the incredible larch groves in the basin E of Monument. I guess Monument is kinda far back there - I told P and M it would take us 6 hrs camp2camp but it took 8; the terrain is kinda slow. I was very stoked to get up Monument, such a remote feel, thanks so much Rebecca for slogging all the way out there with me. Views were clearer today.
We connected with Philip and Maddie again somewhere on the trail down from Pistol Pass and were very excited to share with each other all of our larch viewing encounters.
Thanks so much friends for this trip, so glad things came together.
91/100 - bittersweet to close out the Pasayten peaks
