Ascent Trip ReportMiddle Mtn A, 13460, Prize BM, Booby Prize, 12862 (aka Booby Nipple), 12750 (aka Granpappies Nipple), and 12934 (which doesn’t get a name cuz I don’t like it):
Route notes:
-CR 399 (S Fork Lake Creek Rd) is moderate 4wd to reach where we started and you can drive ~0.75 mile closer to start. The roughest section of this road exists in the first 1.5 miles after turning onto it from the La Plata TH off Indy Pass (near the end of the private property).
Plentiful awesome camping exists beyond the private property boundary (no cell service)
-The ridge between Middle Mtn & 13460 turns extra gnar and I felt it best to avoid it completely, adding more gain and some distance for a safer grassy slope instead
-The toughest part of the day proved to be Prize BM. That peak is the most out of the way from this group with a significant amount of elevation gain to get its summit from this approach. The ridge itself involves more careful route finding and we had a couple easy C3 moves
-I had recently climbed 12750 + 12934 and was not a fan of my route that day; I was determined to find a much better descent option for those two and was pleasantly surprised to find a faint miners trail off the higher of two saddles between these peaks.
-we had an ugly but short war with willows to cross South Fork Lake Creek and reach the trail |
