Ascent Trip Report

This junior varsity pluton that sits directly across from Stone Mountain is actually a wonderful place to view the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the valleys below. Not be confused with many other Wolf Rock mountains, including in Hanging Rock State Park.

Part of the traditional Stone Mountain Loop Hike, this peak can be reached by the Upper Trailhead parking lot over the summit of Stone Mountain and down and up to the HP here. The quickest route is from the Lower Trailhead Parking Lot or up on the MST from Stone Mountain Road.

Whichever route you take, it is worth it and remote enough to enjoy in a serene surrounding. On this visit (that I first climbed in February, 2018), I was amazed to see frozen pools of water in the holes worn out from the rock and also the singular trees clinging to the few plots of isolated soil. Alone and hoping for all the sun and water they can get. This always amazes me that nature can grip and hold onto life in some of the most challenging places. The "rock" is tremendously large and one could spend several hours climbing up and down around the open stone face.

Strangely, the HP is to the north from the rock in the woods. Bushwhack is easy even in Summer, but you may have to walk around for awhile with your GPS to find the 2024 foot highest ground.

If you get a chance, do not miss the opportunity to visit this peak and its close by neighbor, Cedar Rock (see other post on this peak).
