Ascent Trip Report

When I looked at the trip reports for this peak, I noticed they generally talked about the difficulty of the road and the difficulty of the hike. I also noticed they mostly approached from NW, N or NE. Is there something I was missing about Kelsey's much easier looking SE approach (Utah Mountaineering Guide)?

I took the southern loop of the wildlife management area road and parked, using Kelsey's suggestion, at around 7500 ft. where the spur road heads west into the canyon. I thought it was pretty easy driving.

At the end of the short dirt road a maintained, and easy to follow, trail begins and takes you up through the gorgeous forested canyon all the way to the upper meadow. From here, on the right, you can see the easy open country drainage heading up to a saddle on the south ridge. It is sagebrush with a few small trees and plenty of game trails to make life easy. I met the fence before reaching the saddle, and pretty much followed that the rest of the way to the peak.

Advantages of this route are: Zero bushwhacking, Zero scrambling, Zero talus slopes, Zero steep sections. When I got to the peak I checked out the northerly routes and thought "Yikes, I'm glad I didn't try those routes!"

The disadvantages are that this route is longer and with greater elevation gain. Kelsey said he did it in a three hour round trip. It took me twice as long; but then I'm an old lady with minor disabilities who likes to take my time going the easy way...
