Ascent Trip ReportI wanted to hike and no one was available, so as Joe likely mowed the lawn and did the gardens, I decided to go do this hike solo which is not far from Waterville Valley. We had been living in out Stratham house for about 27 years and the yard work and maintenance were starting to impinge on our freedom to go hiking when we wanted. It was a wonderful house that we enjoyed raising our boys in with many friend and family gatherings over the years. We had also renovated every room in the house one room at at time through the years and really loved this house, and loved the warmth, and the many memories we created there, but it was starting to become evident that we were no longer gathering there much as we had been gathering more in our North Conway home. It was never a burden to take care of this home and Joe always took so much pride and loved taking care of the three acres of lawn and expansive gardens. He really did such a nice job, but it was the amount of time it took to do all the care and maintenance that started to really take over some free time that we now found we had without kids at home. When they are at home, it is fine to be puttering around the house but when they move on, you find that you might want to be doing other things. And, we found we had a love of hiking together now and so it was when we started to think we might want to sell our beautiful Stratham home and downsize the maintenance so we could enjoy the free time together. It would take us another four years before we actually did that, but it was the beginning of letting go of this part of our lives and moving on to the next journey. I'm glad we took our time because while we weren't ready just yet, the right time would come when we would both be ready to let go at the same time. So while Joe was mowing the lawn, I went off to hike this relatively easy hike. Turned out it was a solid challenge with a steepness to the trail that was not unlike any typical White Mountain hike. The solitude was nice and I enjoyed it very much, but of course I would have enjoyed it even better if Joe had been able to join me and not be tied to the lawn maintenance. You could also add in Jennings Peak on a short spur trail which I did as Dolores said not to miss it. And so on the solo hike I ticked one off on the Hundred Highest list, not knowing the future of our Stratham house and not knowing if I'd ever really be able to complete the Hundred Highest. Sometimes, you just have to let he seeds be planted and let them grow and flourish into their full bloom.
