Ascent Trip Report

Free parking in car park on W side of quarry. Path 693 through pines separating quarry from the road. The path undulates before becoming a wide track through open pine forest, muddy from the recent rain. Several raw rock wash-outs are crossed and after ~30mins a signed junction is reached. We turn right (Path 691) ascending through lush damp forest and into a steep valley/gully with impressive limestone walls on the E side. Path zig-zags up vegetated scree, crosses a steep rocky 'dry waterfall' to gain the foot of a rock band. A metal cable protects a rising traverse of a ledge into which rough steps have been cut - short and easy. The valley narrows, the path zig-zags upwards crossing a few rocky sections - but nothing difficult. The angle relents and we reach the upper valley of boulders and dwarf pines. Easily up to Sarsteinalm where we turn S and continue without difficulty on the path up N shoulder of Hoher Sarstein. High point is limestone outcropping in grass ~80m NE of the cross.
