Ascent Trip Report

Forecasted rain in the afternoon so I started early, 4:07 a.m. from the Loj trailhead by myself. Hiking with a headlamp was easy on the well worn trail that is well maintained with good water bars and rock staircases in many areas. I turned the headlamp off just after the trail to Wright split off. Made it to the Algonquin Summit at 6:55 a.m.,short break and then down the ridge following the yellow stripe paint on the rock and the cairns across Boundary Peak and up to Iroquois. This took about 45 minutes and a little longer to backtrack. It was very windy on Algonquin so I put on cloth gloves, wool hat and a jacket. I started up to Wright from the junction and when I stepped up to the first part above the tree line the winds were blasting so hard it was hard to walk. I actually had to crawl about the last 40 feet to be safe from the wind it was so intense. I took a detour to see the plane wreck but didn’t make it because it was just too windy, it seemed dangerous. Looking back up to Algonquin, the entire summit was now totally covered in clouds. I’m glad I started early and made the decision to do Wright last, otherwise I would Not have seen the great view including a good look at the Colden Trapdyke. After coming down from Wright I spent some time back at the trail junction talking to the Summit Stewards, eating some RX bars and drinking water.

The day wasn’t
too crowded, I didn’t see anyone until I had started down from Algonquin. In total I saw about 40 hikers. I made it back to the trailhead by 12:55, just under 8 hours moving time and 8 hours 48 minutes total time. The All Trails GPS tracking showed distance of 12 miles and 4416 vertical feet.
