Ascent of Bluff Mountain on 2010-10-17
|Date:||Sunday, October 17, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4840 ft / 1475 m|
Ascent Trip ReportDwarfed by Mt Rogers and Whitetop Mtn, it's hard to believe that this subpeak of Whitetop is the fifth highest peak in Virginia. Bag it as a half-hour side trip from Whitetop.
From US 58 in the Whitetop community about 20 miles east of Damascus, turn north onto Whitetop Road (Road 600). At a gap about 2 miles N, see the historical marker on the L for the White Top Folk Festival. Park on the L just before the road up to Whitetop. On the opposite side of the road, there's a short grassy driveway that marks the start of the hike to Bluff Mountain. There's no trail, but the woods are open and all you have to do is head SE, following the ridge about a half mile to the summit. There are several outcroppings on the summit, and the one on the SW edge appears to be highest.
