Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Hightop Mountain parking area on Skyline Drive and follwed the Appalachian Trail to the high point just west of the summit, then took the use trail to the top. A humid day, with the ground wet and some water in the trail, but the temperature was moderate.

Some details: there's a park trail marker (concrete post) that implies you're at the top of the mountain, but you're not quite there when you reach it. At that marker/post, follow the obvious use trail past a campsite and on up to the top. There are concrete bases from a former structure a few feet from the actual high point. There's a benchmark in a rock a little ways down from the top and near the use trail (look left as you're headed up). No view from the top of the mountain, but there's a nice view to the west from a rock outcrop just off the AT a short distance before you take the use trail to the top.
