Ascent Trip ReportSee my 8/30/20 ascent of Waterrock Knob for the full trip report.
Coming down from Waterrock Knob, the trial is in horrendous condition. The trail is fought with slippery roots, wet rocks, and an ungodly amount of mud which all requires careful footing. DWHIKE's trip report from 2015 shows the trail being in much better shape, so it seems at some point between now and then knowledge of the Cessna plane crash has exploded amongst the hiker crowd. This was evidenced by the large amount of day hikers we passed on the return from Plott Balsam Mountain.
As the trail crests over the top of Browning Knob, an obvious side trail descends to the left. This leads to the Cessna plane crash. The path is steep, but short. Here the wreckage of a Cessna 414 Chancellor rests. Considering the crash occurred in 1983, the wreckage is in remarkably good condition. If you visit the site, please be respectful by not graffiting the hull or taking any "souvenirs".
The summit of Browning Knob lies just past the clearing to the left. You'll see a short path ascent to a large rock outcropping which is the obvious high point. |
