Ascent Trip ReportPlan C worked, but not the easiest route. Several years ago an afternoon thunderstorm rolled up and driving through an endless thicket of dead timber - at a crawl - from the east (Paul McClellan's route) felt like a very bad idea. Tried again a couple of years later from the west and reached a boggy section I was not prepared to test. This time walked up from the Slide Lake trailhead, crossed road above the lakes, worked through the rock jumble at the bottom of the slide, then angled up the big (loose, steep, dusty) gully through burnt timber to reach the road, followed that in from the west a few hundred yards to where downed timber made it so walking through the timber was about the same. This circled around the summit nearly to the opposite side to the road highpoint on the SE side. Headed cross country toward the high point, found two former lookout sites, walked out to the end of the old road to the cliff edge. Could see a great view of the Slide Lakes and the drying Summer Lake with smoke from the big fire near Sisters filling in the rest of the view. Angled back toward the road above the gully, then down to the lakes and the trailhead, avoiding the rock jumble this time. |
