Ascent Trip ReportBagged as part of SB6K challenge.
From the right side of Black Balsam Road, the trail's starting point is obvious. The ascent to the top is simply magical - First the trail weaves through a wonderful spruce-fir forest before dipping out onto one of the largest bald mountains in the Southern Appalachians. The trail climbs steeply, passing over a couple of rock ledges, before it meets the Art Loeb Trail just before the top. The summit offers one of the most impressive 360-degree panoramas in all of WNC, with nearly the entire Shining Rock/Middle Prong Wilderness areas being visible. The summit is a small rock outcropping in the middle of an excellent campsite at the obvious high point. It was very windy on this particular
There is a benchmark stuck on a detached rock right by the summit, which curiously is marked "SILVER MINE".
