Ascent Trip Report

Departed Albuquerque ~6:15 and was hiking up Manzanitas trail with Zeus by 8:45. It was forecast to be a hike forever day with blue skies and warm temps, so I felt justified with the later than usual start time. Turns out the forest service closed Wheeler Peak and the trail to Williams Lake from 8/20-26, which probably funneled a bunch of hikers onto these trails. I saw probably 3x as many groups compared to any of the 12k peak trails (other than Wheeler). From the peak register, it looks like Lobo is frequently hiked with an entry almost daily through the summer at least.

The Manzanitas trail had some steeper ascents where I chose to walk instead of run, but felt it was easily hikeable. We passed through a fence and sure enough there was cattle excrement, torn up trail, and finally cattle blocking the way. The trail switchbacks across a stream countless times in the first 2.5 mi, but then leaves the water, and my furry friend had to go the next 5 mi without water until ~7.5 mi where we met up with the stream along the Italianos trail. After 4.03 mi and 1 hr 29 min we met the intersection with the Yerba trail and at 4.28 mi (1:37) were on top of Lobo Peak. There was only a slight breeze and it was 75F, which seemed very warm for this time of year. The views all around were hazy due to forest fire smoke (we drove past one fire north of Santa Fe and west of the ski area).

Trail junctures were well marked and the trails were easy to follow. If I was to hike only one of the two trails, I found Italianos the better of the two with numerous patches of large, golden flowers. Italianos though was also more heavily trafficked, which may have been due to Williams Lake trail being closed and timing of my run. The final 1 mi jog down the road was a small price to pay for an enjoyable loop run.

In total, my GPS showed 10.37 mi in 2:51 with an ascent of 3642'.
