Ascent Trip Report

In the morning I'd climbed Monte Armetta - the Marguereis group looks very fine from there. It's higher than Armetta but a little less prominent, having a high col to Argentera, which I'm due to climb tomorrow.

From SE, Carnino Inferiore. Arriving late morning I'm lucky to find a parking spot (although few of the many visitors find their way to the summit). Short road walk leads to Carnino Superiore, where the small roadhead car park is already full. The trail leads through a couple of narrow alleys then through fields and past a water fountain. I fork R at Pian Cuccea (see GPS waypoint) and climb steeply to pass the Capanna hut then climb L to cross a col. I should have bagged Cima Bozano (2568m P120) in passing - I'd planned to do so on the way back, but in the event went down a different way. Some minor scrambling leads down to its key col Colle dei Torinesi, climbs gently to a trailfork, then steeply R for the summit, where I swap summit photos with 2 French ladies and admire the spectacular N face. Then in a change of plan I descend the SSW ridge, entering France briefly, then after some easy scrambling, at Passo della Gaina I turn sharp L then R to follow a path, initially clear but soon becoming intermittent. The OpenStreetMap trail is about right, and I find my way back to Pian Cuccea and with a brief stop to refill a bottle at the water fountain, I'm back at the trailhead late afternoon. Excellent circuit. 3h10 up, 10mins on summit, 2h10 down.

Punta Marguareis photos

I make my way to the trailhead for Argentera, which is tomorrow's target with Lee Newton.
