|Date:||Saturday, August 15, 2020|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||14433 ft / 4399 m|
Ascent Trip ReportWe camped just below the Mount Elbert Campground approximately 0.2 miles from the trailhead. We woke up at 4am to make breakfast and fill our water bottles at the hand pump well in the campground and were on the trail at 5:24 am. The hike was exactly what we expected on a late August day in Colorado: warm and snow free with a smokey haze in the air. We made the summit at 8:50 am. Things to be aware of: lots of people and dogs. The dogs were off leash and constantly chasing the pika and other wildlife above tree line and trampling The tundra. I’m a dog person but people should be ashamed of themselves and respect the mountain. Everyone is concerned about destroying coral reefs while not educating themselves on an equally fragile tundra ecosystem. Stay on the trail and leash your dog.
