Ascent of Redington Pond Range-Middle Peak on 2020-08-15Date: | Saturday, August 15, 2020 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Redington Pond Range-Middle Peak | Location: | USA-Maine | Elevation: | 3760 ft / 1146 m |
Ascent Trip ReportParked approx 1.5 miles from the AT in Madrid/Phillips, ME and followed Potato Hill Rd/Old RR Grade to the AT. The TOPO Maps on Peakbagger show a false AT trail on the map and the other routes shown are overgrown and not suitable trails. The crossing is accurate however the AT bears east after 0.5 miles and ascends over Lone Mountain. The AMC Maps in the Maine Mountain guide are correct.
I noticed the discrepancy while parked and reviewing my maps. Too lazy to drive around to the easier access on the CVR I chose to bushwhack approximately 3 miles through often thick and steep woods, using caution to avoid trespassing as the direct route crosses private Federal land. I would recommend avoiding this route.
