Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Humpback Rocks picnic area off the Blue Ridge Parkway west of the peak. Followed a short service road (gated) past a shed and solar panel, cut through the woods to intersect the Appalachian Trail, then followed the trail to a point near the summit, from which a short easy bushwhack took me to the rocks at the top (the trail does NOT cross the actual summit, but comes fairly close). Some topo maps show the AT as passing on the opposite side of the summit area from the actual route. I made it back to my car just as a rain shower started. Given the size of the 3600-foot contour, the actual summit elevation appears to be several feet higher than 3600 feet. A nice little hike. My times up and down reflect a casual hike with several stops to admire the scenery and take pictures; it could be done in well under an hour from where I parked.
