Ascent Trip Report

Right Fork of Lamoille Creek from Camp Lamoille. Mount Gilbert looks steep and intimidating right from the trailhead. My first attempt was to go to the end of the valley and hope to come up the backside. I got to the saddle at the back of the valley, and it didn't look any better, so I opted to climb Mt Fitzgerald that day.

For my second attempt, I decided to try a direct climb and see how that would go. It went, but it was steep, over 4,000 ft of climbing in just less than 4 miles. And 2,000 ft of that was in the last mile. Pretty spectacular, required a fair bit of routefinding. I went up more into the basin, and came down more on the ridge (which I think is the better option). There was snow from a recent storm which hadn't melted which made it more interesting in a few places. Only 6 people in the log book.
