Ascent Trip Report

This was a true gem of a climb, one of the trips that really reminds you why you keep going back to the mountains. My friend Will and I drove up Saturday morning from Portland, arriving at Tucquala Meadows a little before three p.m. We made very good time up the trail to Peggy's Pond, and in fact we briefly considered trying to summit that evening, eventually deciding against it based on the clouds whirling high up on the ridges. So we made camp instead, swatting a couple mosquitoes, but mostly enjoying a cool, comfortable evening in our tents.

The next morning, we set off up the climber's trail at 6:45, making our way up the southeast ridge. We were chasing two other groups that left slightly before we did, and eventually overtook both of them. We found the going mostly mellow, with occasional Class 3 scrambling with occasional exposure - definitely Type I fun for both of us, with no freak-out moments. The landscape up high is very lunar, which I really enjoyed. A couple sections past the east peak were a little scree-filled, but mostly the walking was enjoyable, and before too long we were scrambling the fun and secure summit block. Amazing views were abundant in all directions. We descended with no issues and hiked out, hitting the trailhead almost exactly twenty-four hours after our initial departure.
