Ascent Trip ReportAfter the previous afternoon's Monte Velino ascent.
From S, Lago di Barrea, limited parking at/opposite bar at start of path, up via J5, down via J6. Trail or easy ground all the way, no scrambling.
I arrived late evening, getting a parking spot during the day can be challenging, there are a few spots a short way NW. Good trail J6 starts immediately R (E) of bar, zigzags up thru old scrubby fields. J5 branches off L, just before a wall according to the OpenStreetMap line I'm following, although no paint marks, and the other GPS tracks take a shortcut to the spring, from which the paint marks continue, up thru a shady wood, then more sparsely marked on steep ground above. Markings seem to end at a cairn but clear footpath continues, passing R of a minor top then crossing a reentrant before itself expiring on the extensive grassy uplands. I make a rough beeline for the summit, going via a striking sinkhole/cleft feature, Inghiottitoio Gep. The ornate metal cross seems to be at the highpoint, above a cliff, with fine views. I'm up in 2h50mins; 3 Italians who started soon after me arrive shortly; they disappeared for a while and I suspect took a slightly different route.
After 5mins in the surprisingly strong wind I head down, initially pathless via a minor cairned summit, the Gep and a rocky summit, where paint marks resume and guide me down steep but straightforward ground to the main J6 trail, which is initially in deep grass but soon winds its scenic way down a gentle ravine which widens into open scrub. Forking R at a sign I soon rejoin my upward route (again failing to spot where J5 forks off J6). At the car, as usual someone is wanting my parking space so I drive a short way before the usual post hike food and reporting session. Excellent morning.

In the afternoon I climb Monte Cairo. |
