Ascent Trip Report

All climb stats in Gypsy Peak TR.

NOTE: access road is closed Aug 15 - May 15. This would add 6.5 miles each way and 700 vertical feet.

Google. See attached GPX. Any moderate SUV (Honda Element, Subaru, etc.) can easily make it. An FWD car could make it with moderate effort. Space at TH for half dozen cars. A couple unofficial fire rings.

Arrived at TH at 0800 after Calispell and drive from home, 8.5 hours driving. Took a short nap in the car and was on the trail by 1000. There were two other trucks at the TH, one was group of 3 guys having breakfast when I arrived.

Follow nice trail for 1.75 miles to saddle then obvious boottrack along entire ridgeline. The "shortcut" through the North side of the ridge isn't worth it either up or down: brushy, steep, slippery, and marshy at the bottom. Eat a tiny bit of extra elevation and stick to the trail. Followed the ridgeline the whole way to Gypsy. Great terrain - slightly rocky but enough grass and vegetation to hold down most dust yet open enough to easily navigate through trees and plants.

Passed the 3 guys at the saddle between Peak 6853 and Peak 7177. Pair of bear hunters on Peak 7177. Definitely worth the extra elevation for awesome views across Watch Lake to Gypsy. The NW ridge was my favorite section of the climb. Cairned traverse boottrack around the East side of Peak 7033 which I took on the way back. Chatted with a soloist at saddle before Gypsy who'd been out for 4 nights already. Gypsy ridge is 2c rocky with a blocky summit.

On return I took the East traverse of Peak 7033 (follow boottrack; worth it), West traverse of Peak 7177 (no trail but easy open traverse; worth it), East traverse around Peak 6853 (silly and not worth it), and the Peak 6617 North traverse (totally NOT worth it; just reascend and take the trail). Met a 7 person family at saddle before Peak 6853 (where did all these people come from?!).

0/1 ACCESS (roads, restrictions) - easy for SUV; moderate for car; CLOSED Aug 15 which limits a several months of prime climbing
1/1 REMOTENESS (popularity, sight/Sound) - despite the "crowds" I can't imagine this climb normally being busy. ALL the campsites along the first part of the road in were full though.
1/1 CONDITION (trail/route) - well-established trail and boottrack for whole climb
1/2 VARIETY (flora/fauna, geology, terrain) - nice variety for such a compact climb
2/2 VIEWS (frequency, quality) - vast views into Selkirks, Canada, Abercrombie, etc.
1/1 AWE (does it inspire) - gorgeous area with high payoff for effort
2/2 DANIEL FACTOR (would I enjoy climbing this again: 0=No, 1=Meh, 2=Yes) - I really enjoyed this climb!
TOTAL 8/10
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
