Ascent Trip Report

This is another one of those bumps on the dry plains of eastern Colorado; however, since the highpoint is located on the Logan/Weld County line with the land in Weld County being higher, you will not feel you have reached a highpoint if you look north. As long as you face south you will feel like you are on the highest point, but once you turn around you will see the terrain to the north is noticeably higher. I used directions from Dave Covill's guidebook to reach the trailhead, which is just to the east of a fenced missile silo. This missle silo is located about 1/4 mile south of a cattle guard with a sign reading "IV Ranch" that is fortunately not posted. From the missile silo the highpoint is .98 air mile west. Dave's guidebook suggests continuing to drive south and then east to a different spot to begin your hike to the highpoint, but the gravel road past the missile silo changes to an overgrown primitive pasture farm road and I didn't want to take a chance getting a flat tire trying to reach a place that didn't save me that much hiking distance anyway. There is a barbed wire fence that has to be crossed immediately from where I started hiking, but it was easy to push the top wire down and step over it. In the distance here there is a prominent mound that looks like it might be the highpoint, but it is not. That mound is actually located in Nebraska and is much farther north than the direction needed to be hiked to reach the actual Logan County highpoint. A good landmark when I was there was a large round cattle water tank that lies in the exact direction toward the highpoint from the starting point. I reached the Logan Counbty highpoint after covering 1.09 miles in 22 minutes because I went too far to the north in the beginning of my hike, so I did an extra tenth of a mile. From my vantage point on the Logan County highpoint, I could see a fence running north/south about 30 yards to the east and I wondered if that fence might be built on the Logan/Weld County line, but according to Dave Covill's guildbook the highest point in Logan County is west of this fence and that is where my GPS coordinates took me. I returned to my car in 22 minutes after covering 1.05 miles.
