Ascent Trip Report

Driving Notes from the East:

0.0 From the intersection of Pocahontas Road and S. Rock Creek Lane, Turn West on S. Rock Creek Lane.
3.7 Pavement Ends.
5.9 Road becomes rough, becomes FR 5520 (high clearance recommended).
6.8 Large Campsite on the Left.
8.0 Parking for Killamacue Trail.
9.5 Eilertson Meadow. Turn Left. I parked on the left shortly before a cabin below the road to the right.

The road continues up to near the abandoned Highland Mine and requires high clearance and likely 4WD. There is good parking at about 6600 feet and driving here would save about 1100 feet of climbing on foot. However the road is very narrow at times. Passing other vehicles could be problematic.

The road eventually becomes the Highland Trail. Bear left at a couple of junctions shortly after the mine. The trail leads over a saddle at about 8200 feet. From the saddle I hiked up the open south ridge to the two summit candidates. Maxwell Benchmark lies on the summit to the northeast with nice views of Hunt Mountain and Willow Creek Lake below. The candidate summit to the southwest is unmarked. I did not find a registry at either summits.
