Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead for this trip is the Tamarack Avenue entrance to the Lake Calavera Reserve. The surrounding territory is quite civilized now, not wild as shown in the topo map. Trails to the top of Cerro de la Calavera are quite straightforward, well marked and well traveled. There is a viewpoint to the north of the main peak where there is some kind of a shrine. Peak itself is pretty bleak, having been scoured down by hikers and bikers. There are the remains of an older shrine that looks like it has been plundered in the search for buried treasure.
Trail between Cerro de la Calavera and Peak 390 is a little treacherous and less-travelled. From the flats, you can take a service road up to the gates of the water tower. From there you want to proceed counter-clockwise around the tower in a meandering manner in order to match the blue dot with the brown dot.
Trail down is a combination of trails and service roads leading down to Sage Creek High School. The GAIA map shows a peak called Stone Henge to the northeast of the high school. This merits further attention at some future time.
I took an Uber from the high school back to the trailhead.
